Sir Edward Elgar, 1st Baronet, OM, GCVO (June 2, 1857 – February 23, 1934) was an English Romantic composer. Several of his first major orchestral works, including the Enigma Variations and the Pomp and Circumstance Marches, were greeted with acclaim. He also composed oratorios, chamber music, symphonies and instrumental concertos.
Elgar’s mother, Ann, converted to Catholicism some years before Edward was born. Edward was brought up in the Catholic faith and played the organ at St Georges Roman Catholic Church in Worcester (although so did his father William, a Protestant until he too converted to Catholicism on his deathbed in 1906).

All three songs are short: "The Merry-go-round" 13 bars with two verses – the tune of this is simple and the notation unusually large, indicating that this was written for young children; "The Brook" 13 bars with three verses; and "Windlass Song" 14 bars with four verses.
