Mar 21, 2021 · Thresiamma, known as Ms Kumari, was a famous actress in Malayalam cinema during the fifties. She was the heroine in all the movies made by Subhramanian, and her movie with the famous actor Satyan, titled , was a box-office hit. She quit acting and married an engineer working at FACT (Fertilizers and Chemicals Travancore Ltd).
The plot revolves around rustic life in a small village. Neeli (Miss Kumari), a Harijan peasant girl, falls in love with Sreedharan Nair (Sathyan), a school teacher. Neeli becomes pregnant. Sreedharan Nair refuses to marry Neeli fearing protest from society. Neeli becomes an outcaste. She is later found dead leaving behind her child.
This was also the debut of two legendary personalities in their own rights in Malayalam cinema, Ramu Kariat & Adoor Bhasi. Miss Kumari’s Chellamma would bookend the final in the trilogy of her celebrated roles onscreen of oppressed, resilient & resolute women, the others being Kidappadam(1955) & Randidengazhi (1958).
Miss Kumari Biography. Miss Kumari was a Mollywood actress in the earliest era of cinema. She was active during the decades – 1940’s to 1960’s. Her real name is Thresiamma Thomas and she belonged to Kottayam. She played lead heroine in landmark Malayalam movies - Nalla Thanka released in 1950 and Neela Kuyil released in 1954.
Miss Kumari was Vasanthi, the city-bred, rich girl whose millionaire father is murdered, and a CID is assigned to the case. Vasanthi falls in love with the CID, and after a series of now-familiar ‘car chases, dances in the villain’s lair, CIDs in disguise in the lair’ and other tropes, all ends well. 1955 proved to be the busiest year for Miss Kumari with 5 releases, roughly one film every 2 months !
