Kundan Lal Saigal, often abbreviated as K. L. Saigal (11 April 1904 – 18 January 1947), was an Indian playback singer and actor who worked in Hindi cinema, which was centred in Calcutta (Kolkata) during Saigal's time, but is currently based in Bombay (Mumbai).
K. L. Saigal formerly belonged to Jalandhar, Punjab but he was born and brought up in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. His mother was a religious lady and often took him to religious events, where he could learn some sense of piety, after listening to Bhajans, Kirtans, and Shabads.
Kundan Lal Saigal (1904-1947) was an Indian actor and singer. He is considered the first superstar of the Hindi Film Industry. He was hailed as “Shahenshah-e-Mausiqi” (Emperor of Music) and acclaimed as ‘Ghazal King.’. The status he achieved in singing was a result of informal learning only.
