Berhampore is the administrative headquarters of the Murshidabad district. As of 2011 census, Berhampore is the seventh largest city in West Bengal.

In February 1957 it was the scene of the first overt act of defiance by sepoys (Indian troops employed by the British) that led to the Indian Mutiny (1857–58).
