- Dante's work is called Divine Comedy when there isn't a hint of comedy in it because Dante is using a different definition of comedy from how the term is commonly understood. In the broadest sense in literature, a comedy is a work with a happy ending. At the end of the Divine Comedy, Dante sees God and finds love, wisdom, and salvation.
