Once Upon a River is the story of Margo Crane's odyssey on the mythical Stark River in 1970's Michigan. After tragedy befalls her, Margo comes across many friends and foes as she seeks out her estranged mother, only to find her own way of life instead.
Once Upon a River is the tale of what happens after that. Uncle Cal is shot at the end of chapter three (which closes with a near-identical sentence to “Family Reunion”). During the confusion, Margo’s father is shot dead by her cousin Billy. Margo, blaming herself for her father’s death, runs away.

Her skill draws the attention of the Murray family patriarch, Cal (Coburn Goss). Cal invites Margo to go hunting with him and his sons Billy (Sam Straley) and Junior (Arie Thompson).
