Kahnawake is located on the southwest shore where the Saint Lawrence River narrows. The territory is described in the native language as "on, or by the rapids " (of the Saint Lawrence River) [8] (in French, it was originally called Sault du St-Louis, also related to the rapids).

Luckily, the Kanien’kehá:ka (Mohawk) community at Kahnawá:ke (On the Rapids) is located on Montréal’s South Shore, a short 25-minute drive from the city’s downtown core.
Kahnawá:ke is located 10 kilometers south of Montreal, on the banks of the St. Lawrence River. The word “Kahnawá:ke” means, literally, “on the rapids,” which perfectly describes the Territory’s eastern reaches. Kahnawá:ke is one of several communities that comprise the Mohawk Nation.
During that same period of time, the present day site of Kahnawá:ke, located approximately 10 kilometers from the city of Montreal, proved to be another strategic location politically, economically and militarily.
Their traditional territory was situated between the fur trading posts established at Quebec City by the French and at Albany by the British. Independent and military strong, the Kanien’keha:ka used the colonial rivalry, their geographic location and their exceptional diplomatic skills to their political and economic advantage.
