On a train, the kids meet Nico, a rambunctious non-magical boy who lives with a soothsayer named Pendragon. Nico convinces the Wyttes to meet Pendragon, who in turn agrees to take the kids on as students. Monica, the princess of the kingdom, eventually joins as a fourth student.
Nico watches his companions move on with their lives, and sees Dorian take his place in his friend group and grow closer to Monica, and Mark takes his place at Dani's side. Nico lashes out at them and runs away depressed.
