I did undergrad and grad at my state's flagship R1 public university, and did a postdoc at an Ivy. They don't think either of my prof jobs (small midwestern R2 followed by large southern R1 but isn't a historically big name school) are impressive, and keep asking why i can't come back home and work at my alma mater.

• 4 yr. ago. Good, if broad, questions! To be a tenured professor, you pretty much always need a PhD. I spent 4 years in undergrad, 6 years in a combined MSc/PhD program in the US, and then started my tenure-track job back in Canada.
