QUAD is the abbreviation of quadrat. It comes from quadratus in Latin (Merriam-Webster). \quad and \qquad are macros defined by (La)TeX kernel: \def\quad{\hskip1em\relax} \def\qquad{\hskip2em\relax} For TeXicians, the unit “em” is one of the font dimensions. Say, \fontdimen6 of a font in TeX.

The "em" is a font depending length, frequently as wide as a capital M in the current font. \hspace{<skip>} is a general horizontal spacing command, that tells TeX to leave that amount of horizontal space.
To me, \quad\text{or}\quad seems a bit more natural than \text{\quad or\quad} does... Addendum : As @PrzemysławScherwentl has demonstrated in a separate answer, it is possible -- say, through the use of a PlainTeX-type font-related instruction -- to create a setup in which the value of 1em is not the same in math and text mode.
Mar 23, 2015 · 7. \quad means \hskip 1em\relax. You have to give a length directly as the argument to \parindent. So use \setlength{\parindent}{2em}. You can find the meaning of \quad by texdef \quad in terminal. And to find the value of \parindent, put \showthe\parindent in your file and the value will be show in the log.

The instruction \begin{tabular}{r@{\quad}rl} tells LaTeX that the table is supposed to have three columns: the first two have type r, the third and last has type l.
