- Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo. Bridgeport had seemed destined for a zoo since the days when P.T. Barnum was mayor in the 1870s. He would walk his circus animals through the streets around the time that Beardsley Park was being laid out, to a design by Frederick Law Olmsted.
