Kirov (Russian: Киров, IPA: ⓘ), formerly known as Vyatka (Russian: Вя́тка, IPA: [[ˈvʲatka]]) until 1934 and as Khlynov (Хлы́нов) from 1457 to 1780, [3] [2] is the largest city and administrative center of Kirov Oblast, Russia.
Kirov was an early revolutionary in the Russian Empire and a member of the Bolshevik faction of the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party. Kirov became an Old Bolshevik and personal friend to Joseph Stalin, rising through the Communist Party of the Soviet Union ranks to become head of the party in Leningrad and a member of the Politburo.
