La Martiniere Boys' College is the only school in the world to have been awarded royal battle honours [1] for its role in the defence of Lucknow and the Lucknow residency during the Indian Rebellion of 1857.

Perhaps foreseeing his death, Martin made arrangements for his fantastical fort to be endowed as a boys’ school, named La Martinière College, along with two others in Calcutta and Lyon. He never saw the house completed, dying in 1800 and giving orders to “be salted, put in spirits or embalmed” beneath his beloved Constantia.
