The Illuminati are a fictional secret society and group of superheroes appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. The characters joined forces and secretly work behind the scenes. The Illuminati was established to exist (via story retcon) in their first published appearance in New Avengers #7 (July 2005), written by Brian Michael Bendis. They each represent a certain something that is very special to the Marvel Universe:

•Namor is a King of the Atlantis and the Seven Oceans and represents the antihero mindset.

•Tony Stark represents the Avenger type of hero, one who understands and appreciates that a hero can work with the government, rather than outside of it. He also represents the common man, as he possesses no natural superhuman abilities.

•Reed Richards: Leader of Fantastic Four. Represents the science-based part of the superhero community.

•Black Bolt: King of Inhumans, who are an important part of Marvel history and play an important part in events that have not yet come to pass. He also represents a ruler/king archetype, one that has also been filled by Namor.

•Doctor Stephen Strange: Sorcerer Supreme of Earth. Speaks for the mystical/non-scientific side of the Marvel universe.

•The Illuminati appear in Planet Hulk (movie). They are featured as a recorded message telling Hulk that he is too dangerous to be on Earth and apologized for what they had to do. While they did program the ship to land on a vegetation planet, Hulk ended up landing on Sakaar. Due to Fox owning the rights to the Fantastic Four and Lionsgate owning the rights to the Inhumans, Mister Fantastic and Black Bolt are obscured. Unlike the comics, the Hulk showed no desire for revenge against this group.

•The World War Hulk storyline was adapted to an alternate universe from the Mini Marvels comics, in which the characters are children. The Illuminati met to discuss how to deal with the Hulk. Iron Man was for sending the Hulk into space, while Namor was against it. He eventually convinced the others of his view, until the Hulk stole Namor's sandwich and the Hulk was sent into space. He was with the other Illuminati when they discovered Hulk was returning to Earth. Iron Man, Mister Fantastic and Doctor Strange summoned a bunch of heroes to help defend them from the Hulk but they all refused. During their confrontation, the Hulk punched Iron Man into space but he and the others were rescued when the Hulk discovered they hadn't destroyed his spaceship, it had been Miek pranking the Hulk.

The vote was unanimous save for Namor, who came to blows with the others, knowing that this would lead only to the Hulk’s return and their undoing.
