History. Founded as a customs post with its twin city Albury on the other side of the Murray River, the town grew subsequent to the opening of the first bridge across the Murray in 1860. Originally named Wodonga, its name was changed to Belvoir then later back to Wodonga.

Wodonga shire was created on 10 March 1876, its area including Bandiana and Bonegilla to the south-east of Wodonga. Its area was 167 sq km. The first causeway across the Wodonga flats was formed in 1870, becoming the forerunner of the Lincoln Causeway on which the Hume Highway was built.
Settlement history. European settlement dates from 1836, with land used mainly for grazing and farming. Growth was minimal until the 1850s when a town was established and Wodonga became an important river port for the Ovens goldfield.
