Alibag and its surrounding villages are the historic hinterlands of Bene Israel Jews. According to Indian Jewish historian Esther David, Jews arrived in the region over 2000 years ago, escaping persecution from the Roman Empire, when their ship wrecked here.
It is said that the name comes from a rich Bene Israeli person named Ali/Eli, who dug many wells and gardens in the area. He had several mango and coconut plantations in his gardens. Hence the locals called it “Alichi Bagh” which with time became Alibaug. Ten or eleven of Ali’s wells remain.
Oct 9, 2019 · The town was founded in the 17th century by Kanhoji Angre who was the naval chief during the reign of Shivaji Maharaj. Earlier, Alibaug was known as Kolaba, attributed to the Kolaba Fort which was built by Shivaji in 1680 CE. Located in the Konkan region of Maharashtra, Alibaug is well known for its beautiful beaches and ancient forts.

Earlier, Alibaug was known as Kolaba, attributed to the Kolaba Fort, among the must include places in Alibaug Tour Packages. Legend has it that a wealthy Muslim named Ali owned many plantations hence the town derived its name Alibag. Alibaug has witnessed many historic battles including the one at Varsoli between Siddis and Kanhoji Angre.

The locals used to call the place Alichi Bagh which in Marathi means Ali’s Garden. Alibaug has fertile land, great for the cultivation of vegetables and fruits.
Alibaug is located in Raigad district on the western Konkan coast of Maharashtra. In the seventeenth century Sarkhel Kanhoji Angre, a General of the Maratha Empire, built the city “Alibag”. Raigad district was earlier known as “Kulaba” district.
