Hitchin ( / ˈhɪtʃɪn /) is a market town in the North Hertfordshire district of Hertfordshire, England. The town dates from at least the 7th century. It lies in the valley of the River Hiz at the north-eastern end of the Chiltern Hills. It is 16 miles (26 km) north-west of the county town of Hertford, and 35 miles (56 km) north of London.

Interestingly the name 'Hitchin' was not used until the 17th century but the earliest record of a settlement here goes back 1000 years earlier, to the 7th century.

The historic town centre boasts pretty cobbled streets lined with a mixture of buildings from the Tudor and Georgian periods, housing a surprisingly high number of independent cafes, restaurants and shops.
