Hitchin ( / ˈhɪtʃɪn /) is a market town in the North Hertfordshire district of Hertfordshire, England. The town dates from at least the 7th century. It lies in the valley of the River Hiz at the north-eastern end of the Chiltern Hills. It is 16 miles (26 km) north-west of the county town of Hertford, and 35 miles (56 km) north of London.

Hitchin is a historic market town in the north of Hertfordshire, four miles south-west of Letchworth Garden City. Interestingly the name 'Hitchin' was not used until the 17th century but the earliest record of a settlement here goes back 1000 years earlier, to the 7th century.

- lynda b. Stevenage, UK21 contributions. Fun at the museum. We visited today as there was a craft and pumpkin making event for Halloween week this half time,the staff were amazing with us all,a good selection of things to do including a visit to the headmaster’s haunted house.

May 1, 2023 · In the north of Hertfordshire at the foothills of the Chilterns, Hitchin is a cute market town with a Medieval layout. Market Place, where corn was traded for centuries, is very pretty, as are the old cobblestone streets that radiate from it.
