  6. Jul 29, 2023 · The Gwaun Cae Gurwen Colliery was sunk in 1837 by Richard Hopkin. It was known locally as The Old Pit and the winding was by a beam engine and flat rope drums until 1886. In September 1847, six people were killed when a flat winding rope broke.
