Aug 29, 2023 · The Jurassic-Cretaceous Bight Basin is a large, mainly offshore basin that extends along the southern Australian margin, from the southern tip of Western Australia, across the Great Australian Bight to the western tip of Kangaroo Island. The basin underlies the continental shelf and slope, including two broad bathymetric terraces, in water ...
The basins of the Great Australian Bight (GAB, Figure 1) have received increasing attention over the past decade, particularly by Geoscience Australia in it's efforts to promote them as a frontier of petroleum exploration (Stagg et al., 1990, Totterdell et al., 2000), and by industry to evaluate petroleum prospects (Sommerville, 2001). The

Samples show excellent source rock potential. Initial analysis of data from a new geological sampling survey by Geoscience Australia in the Great Australian Bight provides new evidence for the presence of potential petroleum source rocks in the Bight Basin. Exploratory drilling in the Bight Basin has historically concentrated on the inboard ...

Aug 31, 2022 · The Bight Basin formed during the break-up of eastern Gondwana in the Late Jurassic–Early Cretaceous. It extends for ~2000 km along the Australian southern margin (Figure 1) and comprises a series of extensional depocentres. No significant hydrocarbons have been found in the basin, which remains Australia’s largest exploration frontier.

Jan 11, 2023 · The rainfall pattern is concentric around the extensive arid core of the continent, which in the west and along parts of the Great Australian Bight extends to the coast. Around this arid centre there is a broken margin of more humid conditions which increases the level of precipitation as it nears the coast, particularly in the east of the continent.
Dec 19, 2023 · Australia has large Ore Reserves of mineral sands amounting to 56.5 Mt, 6.7 Mt and 20.0 Mt of ilmenite, rutile and zircon, respectively (Table 1). In 2016, there were seven operations producing ilmenite, rutile and zircon and an eighth producing just zircon (Table 2). These mines account for 26%, 31% and 24% of Australia's ilmenite, rutile and ...
