Dobele (pronunciation ⓘ; ‹See Tfd› German: Doblen) is a town in the cultural region Zemgale in Latvia, and is located near the center of Latvia on the banks of the river Bērze. It received town rights in 1917 whilst being a part of the German occupied Courland Governorate during the First World War. [3] . As of 2020, the population was 8,856. [4]

The rebuilt chapel building was commissioned in 2020 and has become a multifunctional, cultural, craft and tourism development center called Dobele Castle. The castle mound of ancient Semigallians and the ruins of the Livonian Order castle are located in Dobele, on the left bank of the river Bērze.

Dobele ir 18. lielākā pilsēta Latvijā. Nosaukuma izcelsme. 1254. gadā kādā vācu dokumentā fiksēts vietvārds Dubelene vai Dubelone; vēlāk arī Doblene, Doblenen, Doblen. Sākotnējais vietvārds ir rekonstruējams kā Dobelene vai Dobeliene, bet tā izcelšanās saistīta ar latviešu vārdu duobe ('bedre' vai 'ieplaka') un duobele ('maza bedre', 'gramba').
