Clermont / ˈ k l ɛər ˌ m ɒ n t / is a town in Columbia County, New York, United States. The population was 2,058 at the 2020 census. [3] [4] The name of the town is French for "Clear Mountain", in reference to the mountain views in the town. The town is in the southwestern corner of Columbia County, south of the city of Hudson.
The Clermont State Historic Site, also known as the Clermont estate, the Clermont Manor or just Clermont, is a New York State Historic Site in southwestern Columbia County, New York, United States. It protects the former estate of the Livingston family, seven generations of whom lived on the site over more than two centuries.
Clermont was the home to generations of the politically powerful and wealthy Livingston family, but they were not the only people who lived at the site. Enslaved people, indigenous people, tenants and paid workers all lived and worked here and left their own mark on the site.
Clermont is a small town in southern Columbia County that often goes unnoticed, but this town with its beautiful mountain scenery and Hudson River views is more than just a small town – it is a place of early American history.
The original Clermont mansion was built around 1740 and burned to the ground in 1777, as punishment for supporting the rebels during the American Revolution. Martha Livingston rebuilt the home during the Revolution.
