Barking was a large ancient parish of 12,307 acres (49.80 km 2) in the Becontree hundred of Essex. It was divided into the wards of Chadwell, Ilford, Ripple and Town. A local board was formed for Town ward in 1882 and it was extended to cover Ripple ward in 1885.
The borough was created in 1965 as the London Borough of Barking; the name was changed in 1980. It is an Outer London borough and the south is within the London Riverside section of the Thames Gateway; an area designated as a national priority for urban regeneration. At the 2011 census it had a population of 187,000.

4 days ago · Under the Land Drainage Act (1930) the Barking levels came under the control of the Essex Rivers Catchment Board, which by an Act of 1948 was merged in the Essex River Board. The Act of 1930 empowered the catchment boards to levy rates from upland areas not themselves subject to flooding as well as from the marshland tenants.
