Bavaria's second largest lake is one of Munich's favourite destinations. Some Munich residents stay overnight at one of the beautiful campsites or in a hotel with a lake view. For sports fans, Lake Starnberg is ideal for swimming, sailing or rowing.
Located in southern Bavaria 25 kilometres (16 mi) southwest of Munich, Lake Starnberg is a popular recreation area for the city and, since 1976, one of the wetlands of international importance protected by the Ramsar Convention. The small town of Berg is famous as the site where King Ludwig II of Bavaria was found dead in the lake in 1886.
starnberger see is biggest and beautiful lake in south of munich. apart from taking boats, one can trek/walk/bike around the lake and posh starnberg area. remember restaurants by side of the lake could be very expensive. but view of alps in the background is very refreshing

If you look at StarnbergAmmersee from the air, the two large lakes form a bracket around the region: the stately Lake Starnberg with its castles, museums and sophisticated flair and the more laid-back Lake Ammersee with its many cafés, studios and creative artist atmosphere.
Together with the lakes Starnberger See, Pilsensee, Wörthsee and Weßlinger See, the Ammersee forms the “Starnberg Ammersee Cultural Landscape“ near Munich. It is not only one of the largest lakes in Bavaria, but also a popular destination for those seeking peace and tranquillity.
The southern route loops between Tutzing and Seeshaupt at the southern end of the lake, stopping at Bernried, Ambach and Ammerland along the way. There is also a Große Schlösserfahrt which is slightly more extensive and takes in some of the castles around the lake.
