Ocado Group plc is a British business based in Hatfield, England, which licenses grocery technology. It also owns a 50% share in the UK grocery retail business Ocado.com (the other 50% is owned by UK retailer Marks & Spencer). - It was founded in 2000. Ocado can trace its origins back to April 2000. That was the time three merchant bankers with Goldman Sachs decided to get out of finance and move into retail.
- It's a little bit fruity. Figuring out what made a company choose the name it did can be tricky. Half the time, there's no obvious connection between the brand and the name.
- It created its first app in 2009. By 2009, Ocado was well established. It was also on the brink of tapping into a new kind of market with the creation of its first app for the iPhone.
- It went public in 2010. In 2010, Ocado launched its initial public offering (IPO). As Wall Street Journal reported at the time, at least half of the shares were bought by existing investors, including asset manager Fidelity.
Ocado is the only online destination where customers can order the full M&S food and drink range online. Our vast range also covers household brands; unique, niche and artisan food producers, and an award-winning range of own brand products, all price matched with comparable products on tesco.com.
The new joint venture will be called Ocado.com and will deliver M&S, Ocado and big name branded products. It will have access to M&S's database of 12 million food shoppers.
