Churchtown parish has been occupied since Neolithic times as evidenced by the discovery of bronze age implements in the locality. The village itself was originally a collection of hovels until the early 1800s when the Earl of Egmont developed what is now a lime stone- built village.

Mar 28, 2018 · Churchtown is a beautiful stone Georgian village built between 1820 and 1846. It is located in the rolling countryside of the Golden Vale. The area around Churchtown has been settled for c.4000 years; a Bronze axe head found in the parish and so too were the remains of a Great Irish elk.
They set fire to the Barracks and a number of houses adjoining it (which were all thatched in those days). During the attack a number of Policemen were killed and whenever the story is told, even to this day it is referred to as the ‘Burning of Churchtown’.
