    is a large animated franchise from DreamWorks Animation loosely based on the How to Train Your Dragon book series by Cressida Cowell. Before the first movie released, DreamWorks released a series of mini shorts as a way to advertise the film during the 2010 Winter Olympics, titled Racing for the Gold.

    The franchise currently consists of three feature films, four television series, six short films, three specials, eight comics, three graphic novels, and several tie-in games.

    The main franchise centers around the narrative of its protagonist, Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III, as he and his friends learn about the local Dragon population. They learn how to overcome great challenges that come with both growing up, and living alongside many species of vicious reptiles, and learning to co-exist with them in the early eleventh century.

    The spin-off Dragons: Rescue Riders centers around twins Dak and Leyla, along with their dragon friends, as they help and protect the village of Huttsgalor.

    A second spin-off, Dragons: The Nine Realms, takes place in modern day and centers around Tom and his friends discovering the existence of dragons and protecting their secret from their parents, as well as exploring the Hidden World and its many realms.

    The feature films focus mostly on Hiccup and his dragon Toothless, while the TV Series’ also explore in greater detail the other characters and their dragons. and continue to tell the tale of Hiccup and the other Dragon Riders. The DreamWorks Dragons franchise is one of few in existence to explore its characters growing from children to adulthood.
