North Shields is on the north bank of the River Tyne and is a working fishing port. A visit is an excellent way to spend a couple of hours. The Fish Quay has an array of culinary delights with lots of good restaurants to choose from. Founded by Thomas Smith (as William Smith & Co) who acquired a shipyard on the riverside at St Peter’s near Byker in 1810, the business proved a success. As part of its expansion a dock was leased downstream at North Shields and the firm opened a ballast quay here in 1822 at Limekiln Shore.
