Oct 31, 2009 · Mill Point was first settled in the early 1770's and was the site of Fort Day in 1774. The first chain stitch sewing machine was invented near here by E. A. Gibbs. The Text of the Marker reads:
Marker text: MILL POINT Here in 1750 Stephen Sewell, a pioneer settler, camped. It was site of Fort Day, 1774. To the north James and John Bridger were killed in the Indian raids, 1778. Here James E. A. Gibbs invented the chain stitch sewing machine. West Virginia Historic Commission, 1969
