"Hurricane" (originally titled "Hurricanes") is the fifth track from Kanye West's tenth studio album, Donda (2021) and the second track from the deluxe version of Donda. It was released as a single on September 14, 2021, serving as the lead single from the album. The track features vocals from The Weeknd and Lil Baby, along with uncredited vocals from the Sunday Service Choir and KayCyy.
The final version of the track features lyrics about Ye's then-ongoing divorce with Kim Kardashian, The Weeknd's embrace of spirituality, and Lil Baby's reflections on losing some of his friends and wanting to "restart."
Over the years, the track gained notoriety as one of Ye's best known unreleased tracks. It appeared in a promotional clip for the cancelled Yandhi project. Subsequent leaks have revealed that all sorts of artists recorded contributions to the song, but only Lil Baby and The Weeknd's additions made it onto the final mix.
In 2022, the song won the award for the Best Melodic Rap Performance at the Grammy Awards. It marked Ye's 24th Grammy win, tying him with Jay-Z for the most Grammy wins of all time.
The song originates from the Good Ass Job with Chance the Rapper era of 2018, with the earliest known version of the song being Ye singing the hook of it over a beat produced by Nascent. Although the song was cut from the tracklist due to Chance not wanting it and the album later being cancelled, the song considered by many’s and Kanye himself to be named 80 degrees but then changed it to hurricane and carried into Yandhi with the first version of the track being a freestyle of a portion of it after explaining that it "has to be eighty degrees to be a hurricane." The known earliest finished version of it which contains Ye singing with a vocoder effect appeared in the Yandhi announcement video that was posted on September 27 of that year. At one point, a hook for "Hurricane" was written for Rihanna to sing, but it is unknown if it ever happened.
The track was reworked many times over the course of two years, with leaks revealing artists such as Young Thug, Ty Dolla $ign, Big Sean, Tony Williams, G Herbo, STALONE, Sean Leon, KayCyy, and Ant Clemons were intended to be on the track. Versions of the song with different Sunday Service Choir vocals have also been leaked, and reference tracks for the song from 070 Shake, Mykki Blanco, Nino Blu, Lil Yachty, Fivio Foreign, Don Toliver, Cailin Russo, VIC MENSA, Consequence, Baby Keem, Bruza The General and even Albe Back's daughter Kaity are also said to exist via leakers.
During the DONDA: WITH CHILD era in November 2020, Kanye was seen filming a music video in Manhattan for "Hurricanes" which featured Lil Baby and was directed by Hype Williams. However, this music video was never released and it has not been leaked.
On March 8, 2022, Kanye released the official music video for "Hurricane". It is centered around the end of the world as acid rain falls and bodies pile up.
