Ashe was accompanied by his wife to Kodaikanal and when the train was halted in Maniyachi Railway Junction, Vanchinathan with his companion entered the coach and fired him with a pistol. Then he ran along the platform and took cover in the latrine.

In 1911, Vanchinathan assassinated British Collector Ashe in Maniyachi near Tirunelveli. The assassination of Ashe was South India's first political assassination. Vanchinathan has earned a lasting place in the annals of Southern India's independence movement.
