It is the only university in Southern Sri Lanka (also referred to as the Kingdom of Ruhuna). Its established by a Special Presidential Decree on 1 September 1978 [4] as Ruhuna University College and upgraded to a fully-fledged university on 1 February 1984 by a University order.
The university has responded to the needs of the country and established two new faculties — 'Management and Finance' and 'Fisheries and Marine Science' — the first of its kind in Sri Lanka. Thus, the university has as many faculties as the University of Peradeniya, the largest in Sri Lanka. The main campus is at Matara.

When the University of Ruhuna appeared as a fully-fledged university, the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences underwent a radical change as an academic body. Currently, it remains as a well-established faculty offering Bachelors, Masters and Doctoral Degrees in a wide spectrum of disciplines of diverse fields
At this 41st year of inception of University of Ruhuna, the Faculty of Graduate Studies serves as a well-established faculty managing all postgraduate programs of University of Ruhuna, under all disciplines.
