Jul 11, 2022 · Dragon Ball is a Japanese media franchise created by Akira Toriyama in 1984. The initial manga, written and illustrated by Toriyama, was serialized in Weekly Shōnen Jump from 1984 to 1995, with the 519 individual chapters collected into 42 tankōbon volumes by its publisher Shueisha.
Produced by Toei Animation, the anime series premiered in Japan on Fuji Television on February 26, 1986, and ran until April 19, 1989. Spanning 153 episodes it covers the first 194 chapters of the 519 chapter-long manga series. It is followed by Dragon Ball Z, which covers the remainder of the manga.
