This district, situated on the Cuttack-Sambalpur road is believed to have derived its name from a Savara chief named Dhenka, who have ruled the land. The Dhenkanal District touches the boundary of Kendujhar district on its north, Cuttack district on south and bounded by Jajpur District on the east and Angul District on its west. Moreover, Dhenkanal district has produced numerous freedom fighters who left everything and sacrificed their life for one common goal-freedom of India from British. One of those freedom fighters was Baji Rout, who lost his life at a very early age of 12.
