May 30, 2024 · History. Sonipat name is derived from the word Sonpat which means in Sanskrit language the suvarna prastha (gold place). One popular tradition avers that it is one of the five patas or prasthas (Indraprastha, Panipat, Talpat, Bhaghpat and Sonipat) mentioned in the Mahabharata which Yudhishthira demanded from Duryodhana.
It lies in the south-east of the state of Haryana, north of Delhi and is bounded by the districts of Rohtak, Jind and Panipat. The district shares an inter-state boundry with district Meerut of Uttar Pradesh.
