The Esalen Institute, commonly called Esalen, is a non-profit American retreat center and intentional community in Big Sur, California, which focuses on humanistic alternative education. The institute played a key role in the Human Potential Movement beginning in the 1960s.
Esalen exists in deep relationship with the forces of nature. From the transfiguring force of a wildfire to the limitlessness of the star-filled night sky, we honor the myriad ways that nature is our source and greatest teacher.
Weekend or week-long stays are the most common way to visit Esalen. Esalen Institute is open! However, Highway 1 to the south is closed — please review the current travel advisory.

And if you decide to come, please, don't bring your kids.
