The Merseyside Maritime Museum is a museum based in the city of Liverpool, Merseyside, England. It is part of National Museums Liverpool and an Anchor Point of ERIH, The European Route of Industrial Heritage. It opened for a trial season in 1980 before fully opening in 1984 and expanding in 1986.
At Maritime Museum you can explore the history of the great port of Liverpool, with four floors of galleries: Seized! The Border and Customs uncovered; the Emigration gallery; Liverpool: World Gateway; the Titanic, Lusitania and Empress of Ireland gallery; the Battle of the Atlantic; the Art and the Sea Gallery; and the temporary exhibition space.
Exploring maritime history through the ages, our collections consist of objects and archives connected to ships, boats, life at sea, the port of Liverpool and its connection to the world. Highlights include our ship models, paintings, works on paper and boats, as well as the largest object in the collection, the Edmund Gardner pilot ship.
A visit to the Maritime Museum can also include the International Slavery Museum which is based on its third floor. Maritime Museum is also home to the Maritime Archives centre, which is a great resource for anyone with links to Liverpool researching their family tree.
Over several floors (lifts are available) you can explore links to slavery, ocean liners of note, including the Titanic, the importance of the docks to Liverpool in the past and present.
