Sep 18, 2010 · Subsequent to intense contemplation in isolation, Tukaram began to compose his abhangs, devotional stanzas or poetry, to convey his bhakti to Panduranga. He felt that he could not focus on God if he continued with his material world.
Tukaram pointed out the evil of wrongdoings of society, social system and Maharajs by his kiratans and abhangs. He faced some opposition in society because of this. A man named Mambaji harassed him a lot, he was running a matha in Dehu and had some followers. [8]
One Hundred Poems of Tukaram is a first book-length attempt at reproducing the original form of Tukaram's poems viz. abhang into English. As a poetic form, abhang has been explored by all Varkari saints for their poetic expressions. An abhang can be of two types: four-lined stanzaic and two-lined stanzaic.
Tukaram was a seventeenth century poet who lived in the town of Dehu, which is located near Pune. He was a popular poet and a leading figure in the Varkari Movement of the time, which sought to put the emphasis back on devotion and love towards God, in contrast to blind obedience of rituals and arcane religious practices.
