In April 2020 the creation of Te Pūkenga | New Zealand Institute of Skills and Technology was an outcome of the vocational education reform. This involved bringing together the 16 ITPs and 9 ITOs into a single, national, unified network of regionally accessible vocational education and training.
Te Pūkenga – New Zealand Institute of Skills and Technology is the largest vocational education provider in New Zealand. In February 2019, the Government announced that the country's sixteen Institutes of Technology and Polytechnics (ITPs) would merge to form the new organisation; the merger was effective on 1 April 2020. Te Pūkenga brings the Institutes of Technology and Polytechnics (ITPs) and the arranging training activities of certain Industry Training Organisations (ITOs) together to create a national network. This will give learners more choices and flexibility in what, where, and how they learn.
