The Act consolidates the laws relating to food and establishes the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India. It regulates the manufacture, storage, distribution, sale and import of food articles to ensure safe and wholesome food for human consumption.
The Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 (Act No. 34 of 2006) received the assent of the President of India on 23rd August 2006 and thereafter published in the Gazette of India (Extraordinary) Part I, Section 1 dated 24th August, 2006.
