Feb 8, 2023 · The human papillomavirus (HPV) can cause cervical, head and neck, and other types of cancers. The HPV vaccine has been shown to be safe and effective in preventing these cancers. The age limit for who can and should get the HPV vaccine has risen since the vaccine was approved in 2006.

HPV vaccine is recommended for routine vaccination at age 11 or 12 years. (Vaccination can be started at age 9.) ACIP also recommends vaccination for everyone through age 26 years if not adequately vaccinated when younger.
For girls 15 years and older, and immunocompromised individuals 3 doses are recommended. For two-dose schedule, the minimum interval between doses should be 6 months. Either HPV4 (0, 2, 6 months) or HPV2 (0, 1, 6 months) is recommended in a 3-dose series for females aged 15 years and older.
