  1. Aug 28, 2018 · This means #12 heads would be for all RA III applications and for any Firebird or Tempest with the 400 cubic inch V8, manual trans and 4 barrel carb. The #13 head is for 400 cubic inch V8, M40 auto trans with 4 barrel carb used in Firebird, Tempest and Grand Prix.

There were heads with casting number 16 in 1968, 1970, 1973, and 1974. #16's in 1968 had big valves and screw in studs, and were for all practical purposes identical to the 1969 #62's. In 1970 16's had smaller valves.

  3. Oct 20, 2009 · Pontiac iron head chambers were always beautiful but as-cast ports sucked. I've seen some really pretty and very well ported iron heads on the Westech flowbench only flow 230 at .500 lift. That same head with small 1.96/1.66 valves will have lower flow numbers than the larger valve head at higher lifts.

  4. Jan 29, 2024 · Sick467. 72 cc heads on a otherwise stock 400 would be around 10.5:1 based on the 67 / 670 head combo. TOO MUCH CR for pump gas and iron heads. You would be pushing it with aluminum heads too unless your engine was built with meticulous attention to EVERY detail.

  5. Oct 11, 2016 · Retarding timing makes an engine run hot. Advancing the timing makes the engine run cooler. The stock timing for the '71 455 HO is 12 degrees BTDC, the 1970 RAIV is 15 degrees so 16 is in the ball park. I attached the distrib/timing specs from the 1968 Pontiac Service Manual just for example.

  6. May 14, 2022 · Either: Seat the dizzy fully, by turning it until it drops in (either of two ways), set the engine to TDC, then make wherever the rotor is pointing number one. OR. Set the engine to TDC, and then turn the oil pump with a screw driver until your rotor will point to the wiper motor, when the dizzy is seated. Either method works, but the 2nd will ...

  7. Jan 25, 2022 · So last night I started trying (unsuccessfully )to install long tube headers on my 71 Lemans with a 400. First, I had to drain the oil and remove the filter on the passenger side. Still couldn't get it to go and removed the oil filter housing. Finally got the passenger side wedged in there, but it is laying on the motor support crossmember and ...

  8. May 29, 2023 · Pontiac used the same flat top piston in all their engines and used the combustion chamber size to change compression ratio's. Assuming you do have the correct "48" heads for your engine, there appears to be 2 different chamber volumes - 1 for the 350HO and the other for the RAIII.

  9. Jan 15, 2023 · Pontiac engines typically use a loose valve guide clearances for "upper cylinder lubricant". This can be why you see a puff of smoke when a stock Pontiac engine starts up. You may think the O-rings are bad, and they may be on an engine with a lot of miles or years, but if your engine is not using excessive oil and the blue smoke goes right away, it may be normal.

  10. Jun 5, 2022 · Thanks. The BOP 3-speed is called a Dearborn, one of the Ford 3 speeds that got put in the Pontiacs. They are basically a "3.03" transmission with a different input and tailhousing. The GM style uses a 1.125 diameter input shaft and the tailhousing gives a mounting pad for the Hurst or Hurst style shifter.
