O'Brien County is a county in the U.S. state of Iowa. As of the 2020 United States Census, the population was 14,182. [2] . The county seat is Primghar. [3] History. By the time Iowa attained statehood (December 28, 1848), its Territorial Legislature had created 44 counties.

O'Brien, the first town and county seat in O'Brien County, was located on the Moding farm, three miles west of Peterson in the period from 1861 through 1872. The entire area west of Peterson and Clay County was un-surveyed, uninhabited land making up the Territory of Woodbury in the spring of 1856.
