Ram Charan was born in Madras (now Chennai) in a Telugu family to actor Chiranjeevi and his wife Surekha on 27 March 1985. His family hails from Mogalthur and Palakollu in the West Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh. His maternal grandfather was the noted comic actor Allu Ramalingaiah. He has two siblings — an older sister Sushmitha and younger sister Sreeja.
