Feb 23, 2024 · 1. Visit Funchal Cathedral – Sé. Located in the city center, The Cathedral of Funchal (Sé) is one of the main historic landmarks of Funchal. Built in the beginning of the 16th century, at the peak of the Portuguese explorers’ era, Funchal Cathedral is a symbol of power and prosperity.
- Quinta do Palheiro Ferreiro. One of many benefits of Madeira’s constant spring-like weather is that gardens like this one can be in bloom whenever you visit.
- Funchal Cathedral. In the city’s cathedral you’ll be stepping back to the Portuguese Age of Discovery. This building was constructed at the dawn of the 16th century using multi-toned pyroclastic rock quarried from the cliffs at Cabo Girão to the southwest.
- Monte Cable Car. One of those unavoidable attractions in Funchal is the cable car that hoists you up to the perched Monte neighbourhood 600 metres above sea level.
- Monte Palace Tropical Garden. Winding through seven hectares of terraces is another botanic garden, where exotic plants are accompanied by waterfalls architectural flourishes like a Japanese pagoda.
- Take the Funchal cable car to the Botanical Gardens. One of the best and most popular things to do in Funchal is taking the panoramic cable car from the cable car station in Funchal city center to the village of Monte, lying 580 meters above sea level.
- Take an adventurous wicker toboggan ride. As I said in the previous section, one way of getting back after you have taken the Funchal cable car and reached the Monte village is by taking a ride on the famous Funchal wicker toboggans, better known as ‘Monte sleds’.
- Take a walking tour of Funchal City. There’s no better way to explore Funchal than taking a walking tour through its cobbled streets, traditional houses, and Funchal Bay, while you learn about the history of the Island’s capital city and Madeira itself.
- Learn about Cristiano Ronaldo’s life at his museum. If you are a huge fan of the football legend Cristiano Ronaldo, you probably already know that Funchal is his hometown, so this is your chance to visit the CR7 Museum, where you’ll learn about his life story, achievements, and see memorabilia, trophies and more!
- Drink a poncha… or three. What better way to start this huge list than with a drink? A potent one, naturally. Poncha is Madeira’s national drink and it is bloody LETHAL.
- Ride up the cable car to Monte and wave at EVERYONE who goes past… …Bonus points if it’s someone who looks like they really don’t want to wave back but they do anyway because that’s the law of the cable car.
- Find the prettiest (pink!) square in Funchal. You wouldn’t believe how many photos I’ve taken of this square over the last decade. It has to be my favourite photo spot on the whole island.
- Eat delicious local food at all the incredible restaurants and cafés. Madeira, and Funchal specifically, is a paradise for foodies. I’m not going to go into detail on specific restaurants and cafés to visit here, nor into what traditional Madeiran dishes you have to try.
- Take a Free Walking Tour of Funchal Old Town. Price: Tip Based (Offered in English and Spanish) Start with a free guided walking tour of Funchal Old Town.
- Wander the Old Town of Funchal. The first port of call for most visitors to Funchal if exploring the city without a guide is to go for a wander in its Old Town or historic centre, known locally as Zona Velha.
- Stop by the Sé Cathedral of Funchal. Price: Free. Sé Cathedral de Nossa Senhora da Assunção, also The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption, is a Roman Catholic church located right in the centre of Funchal Old Town.
- Marvel at the Street Art on Santa Maria Street. The Street art known as Art of Open Doors or Arte Portas Abertas, found on the doors of the buildings along Santa Maria Street is part of Funchal Municipality’s initiative aimed at revitalising this part of Funchal Old Town which had become notorious and disused.
