Beteille was born to a French father and an Indian mother. He received his undergraduate and graduate degrees in anthropology from the University of Calcutta. Thereafter he received his doctorate from the University of Delhi.After a brief stint at the Indian Statistical Institute as a research fellow, he joined the faculty of sociology at the DSE.

Andre Beteille is a Professor Emeritus of Sociology at Delhi School of Economics in University of Delhi. In his long and distinguished career, he has taught at Oxford University, Cambridge University, the University of Chicago and the London School of Economics.
He was a Professor of Sociology at the Delhi School of Economics at the University of Delhi where he is Professor Emeritus of Sociology since 2003.Béteille has written insightfully about all the major questions of the day: India's encounters with the West, the contest between religion and secularism, the relationship between caste and class, the links between poverty and inequality, the nurturing of public institutions, the role and responsibilities of the intellectual.
Aug 1, 2012 · Abstract. André Béteille’s Caste, Class and Power has grown out of his fieldwork in Sripuram in Thanjavur District, Tamil Nadu. The book’s main strengths are the clarity of its descriptive analysis of the three caste groups and agrarian classes, as well as the interactions between them; and the force of its theoretical argument about the relationship between the caste structure, the class system and the distribution of political power.
In Caste, Class and Power, André Béteille recounts the gradual transformation of a social system that, till the end of the nineteenth century, was structured primarily on distinctions of caste—between the Brahmins, the middle-level non-Brahmins and the Adi-Dravidas. Based on extensive field study carried out in a South Indian village, the book presents the different ways of studying the themes of caste and class.
