Part 1: Configuring your GitHub account. The first steps in starting with GitHub are to create an account, choose a product that fits your needs best, verify your email, set up two-factor authentication, and view your profile. There are several types of accounts on GitHub.
To get started with GitHub, you'll need to create a free personal account on GitHub.com and verify your email address. Every person who uses GitHub.com signs in to a personal account. Your personal account is your identity on GitHub.com and has a username and profile.
If you need to use multiple accounts on GitHub.com, you can sign in to your accounts and switch between them without always being required to reauthenticate.
Then, you can either authenticate with a personal access token or via the web browser. For more information about authenticating with GitHub CLI, see gh auth login. If you authenticate without GitHub CLI, you will need to generate an SSH public/private keypair on your local machine and add the public key to your account on GitHub.com.
Simply visit https://github.com, choose a user name that isn’t already taken, provide an email address and a password, and click the big green “Sign up for GitHub” button. Figure 81.
