Sir Michael Anthony Eardley Dummett FBA (/ ˈ d ʌ m ɪ t /; 27 June 1925 – 27 December 2011) was an English academic described as "among the most significant British philosophers of the last century and a leading campaigner for racial tolerance and equality."
Michael Dummett was one of the most influential British philosophers of his generation. His philosophical reputation is based partly on his studies of the history of analytical philosophy and partly on his own contributions to the philosophical study of logic, language, mathematics and metaphysics.

Born in 1925, Professor Sir Michael Dummett spent most of his career working at the University of Oxford, becoming the Wykeham Professor of Logic there in 1979, a post that he held until his retirement in 1992. He was knighted in 1999 and died in 2011.
Dummett’s thinking about language largely begins from Wittgenstein and from A.J.Ayer’s verificationism. The verificationists used the slogan that ‘only verifiable sentences are meaningful’, to dismiss metaphysics. Dummett, though, argues that verificationism itself embodies a metaphysical view.
