As editor of the Open Court Publishing Company, he published hundreds of books and articles that were very influential in the fields of comparative religion, philosophy, science, and mathematics.
Paul Carus was born in Prussia in 1852. He studied mathematics, the natural sciences, classical philology and philosophy and received the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at Tiibingen in 1876. He came to the United States in the 1880s, and, in 1887, became the editor of a Chicago.
CARUS, PAUL(1852–1919) Paul Carus, a philosopher and monist, was born at Ilsenburg, Germany, and died in La Salle, Illinois. After receiving his Ph.D. at Tübingen, in 1876, and completing his military service, he taught in Dresden.
The Gospel of Buddha is an 1894 book by Paul Carus. It is modeled on the New Testament and tells the story of Buddha through parables. It was an important tool in introducing Buddhism to the west and is used as a teaching tool by some Asian sects.
