Johann Ludwig (also known as John Lewis, Jean Louis) Burckhardt (24 November 1784 – 15 October 1817) was a Swiss traveller, geographer and Orientalist. Burckhardt assumed the alias Sheikh Ibrahim Ibn Abdallah during his travels in Arabia. He wrote his letters in French and signed Louis.
It was found by a 27-year-old Swiss explorer called Johann Ludwig (or Jean Louis) Burckhardt. Born in 1784 to a rich family, who lived in Basle and counted Gibbon and Goethe among their acquaintances, his main language was French and he thought of himself as Louis.
